Transforming Urban Spaces: The Urban Valley Commercial District by TROP

A Unique Approach to Public Commercial Spaces

In 2021, TROP : terrains + open space undertook the task of creating a public commercial district in Shanghai, China, distinct from traditional enclosed communities. The vision was to establish a connection between Jiangpu Park in the south and the riverside greenbelt in the east, forming an urban valley that offers residents and visitors an immersive experience amidst retreated boundary walls.

Harmonizing Landscape and Architecture

The landscape design seamlessly integrates with the architectural language, emphasizing connectivity between interior and exterior spaces. Through scaling and gradient changes, the design achieves a spatial layout resembling a square externally and a courtyard internally. Drawing inspiration from natural elements like woodlands, mountain streams, and valleys, the district offers a unique and natural commercial experience.

Project Exposition and Integration

The project includes an exhibition center and a water bar along the street. Integrating these spaces while meeting functional demands posed a challenge. The focus was on harmonizing the staggering spaces to create a cohesive environment conducive to diverse activities.

Woodland and Garden Spaces

Adjacent to the park, the woodland extends the urban park to the site, creating a multilayered urban valley. Urban furniture and linear square settings enhance visual interaction, while the garden on the second floor provides residents with a shared green space. Seasonal plants and a private garden offer opportunities for relaxation and interaction with nature.

Brook and Artistic Elements

The brook serves as the main entrance, reminiscent of the alleys of old Shanghai. Abstracting the concept of a stream flowing in a valley, cascade water features and cantilever planting create an artistic installation, enhancing the district’s identity and aesthetic appeal. An art exhibition hall adds vibrancy to the project.

Mountain-inspired Features

A tropical rainforest design guides population flow and offers visitors the experience of traversing through the mountain. Stepping stones floating on water surfaces provide an interactive element, inviting exploration and engagement within the commercial district.
