Situated in Barcelona’s vibrant Borne district, the BSP20 House, designed by Raúl Sánchez, is a testament to resilience and adaptation. Despite these obstacles, the vision to preserve the building’s exposed brick walls and incorporate traditional hydraulic mosaic remained unwavering.

Originally a dilapidated structure from the late 19th century, the BSP20 House underwent a radical transformation. With floors barely measuring 20 square meters each, the building required extensive renovation to meet modern standards. The renovation process involved complete demolition, retaining only the facades, dividing walls, and roof slab. As the construction unfolded, the building’s essence was revealed, inspiring the decision to showcase its rich history through exposed walls adorned with remnants of its past.
Embracing Heritage and Innovation
The design concept revolves around maintaining the integrity of the original structure while infusing modern elements for contemporary living. The interior layout is organized vertically, with distinct zones for different functions. From the ground floor foyer to the top-floor terrace, each space offers a unique experience, adaptable to the evolving needs of its inhabitants. Central to the design is a striking spiral staircase, crafted as a freestanding cylinder, offering panoramic views of the building’s diverse textures and materials.
Harmonizing Old and New
While the existing walls exude raw authenticity, new elements introduce refinement and sophistication. The kitchen features frosted brass cabinets and white marble countertops, while the bathrooms are adorned with lacquered wood and brass details. Throughout the interior, a combination of materials such as microcement, oak floors, and white microcement headboards adds warmth and texture. The structure’s white-painted finish creates a sense of material abstraction, contrasting with the rugged beauty of the exposed walls.
