In the Anatolian city of Eskişehir, Turkey, tradition meets modernity with the unveiling of the Odunpazarı Museum of Modern Art (OMM). Designed by Japanese architects Kengo Kuma and Partners, this museum stands as a tribute to the region’s rich history of woodwork and trading.
Architectural Design
The museum’s exterior is a captivating blend of tradition and innovation, featuring eleven square-edged timber cubes nested within one another. Behind the solid timber cladding lies a glazed façade, providing both heat insulation and fire protection.
VISS Façade and Doors
For the expansive glass façades adorning the entrance areas and terraces, the architects turned to Jansen’s VISS profile system. Known for its high thermal insulation properties and ‘Passivhaus’ energy efficiency certification, VISS ensures optimal performance, crucial for the harsh Anatolian winters. The post and mullion construction, paired with double-insulated glass, boasts an impressive insulation value of 1.4 W/m2K. Despite its robust construction, the profiles maintain slim proportions, with a face width of just 50 millimetres.
The VISS façade pivoting door at the main entrance, standing at 4415 millimetres in height, continues the elegant contour of the VISS façade. Custom-designed for the museum, this door adds to the grandeur of the entrance area.
Fire Protection
Given the extensive use of wood in the museum’s design, fire safety was a top priority. Jansen’s fire safety solutions offer comprehensive protection while seamlessly integrating with the architectural vision. The glass façade between the events space and terrace meets the EI60 fire safety standard, thanks to the VISS Fire steel profile system. Additionally, the outward-opening revolving doors, constructed using Janisol C4 EI60, blend harmoniously with the façade while adhering to safety regulations.
